SufferSummerfest 2010

Summer of base building and marathon prep...

As June begins to wind down, the temps around here are on the rise. I knew this day would come. I told my running buddies this winter, that we would miss the cool, morning runs. It was reported earlier this week that Savannah was the hottest place in the country. Back-to-back days of 100+ temps. I went for my 5 miler on Tuesday and was I in for a rude awakening...Struggling to run a 10:30, my HR was sitting in the high 150's. Yesterday's run was a little better, about 8 degrees cooler and I held a 9:40 for the overall pace. Striders afterward were a struggle to hold proper form...Is this what I am in for all summer???

I keep setting the alarm in an attempt to wake up and run before work. I end up playing teh snooze bar game. it is not in my genetic make-up to rise early and be a dew sweeper...So, I will b!tch about the heat for another week or two, before my body gets used to it.

I am in week one my Mystery Mountain Marathon training program. This race will be held on 10/10/10 (same day as Chicago); I will piggy back off of this training and attempt run a 3:30 Mary at Kiawah in December. This all hinges on me dropping about 20 pounds over the next 4-5 months...very achievable goal.

So, here is my training schedule...What do you think?

It's hot in Savannah?

Do the network news divisions know about this unforeseen development?

Hahahahaha!

I went for a run a couple of weekends ago when it was in the 80s maybe? But felt way hotter, so I decided to do the old 10 minutes running, 1 minute walking dealie - which I never do - and I used up a camalback backpack of water PLUS a liter bottle on my belt. Running a mere TEN miles.

Nearly killed me. A LOT of that water went on my head.

Good luck with the 3:30 marry. I'm sure you'll do it.

I'm tellin' ya, man, this heat is VICIOUS! I went out for five miles yesterday evening and didn't make it. By mile 3 I thought I was going to puke or pass out or both.

When I got home I looked at weather.com, and it was showing the heat index to still be 96.

This sucks. I'm ready for November again.

Alright already, Peachy Escargot. You canNOT use that handle if you're going to be running a 3:30. It's just not right.

That's an aggressive training plan. Thanks for the legend at the bottom, because without that, all I understood was "rest".

Happy training!

Hi Thomas,
I don't know how you people in the south do it!?! It is so hard for me running in the heat and humidity. I have so much respect for you getting out there and pounding out the workouts:) Good luck with your sauna like training:)

MMM...Excel spreadsheets make me drool.

Training plan looks mighty solid. I couldn't tell without total mileage- does it allow for a scale back week every 4th week or so?

Anyways- nice, serious approach. 3:30? No problem.

You know it's hot when there were only 6 burglaries in your hood this week as opposed to the usual 15.

The pool felt like a sauna, so I'm not envying the 10 8 or so degrees you have on me.

I really like the training plan. I emailed Sean and based on his feedback I think that mine is going to look very similar to yours.

But, I will admit that your plan had a lot of letter acroynms that I had NO clue what they stood for.

With temps like those, you should be able to drop 20 pounds of sweat in one session...or two. Take it easy out there.
